John Wyndham’s The Day of the Triffids has become such a fixture in our popular culture that it is hard not to imagine “Janette Scott fights a Triffid that spits poison and kills”. Or you may think of other adaptations.
What you aren’t likely to recall is that the novel was serialized in Colliers’ Weekly in January-February 1951 as a five-part serial. (Colliers? Yes, Colliers ran quite a bit of Science Fiction that didn’t scream SF, by authors like Ray Bradbury, Jack Finney and Kurt Vonnegut.)
